Despite the work of this government child poverty is still a major issue within British society with great wealth and inequality juxtaposed together in many places. In my home city of
The Children’s Plan launched by Ed Balls earlier in the week sets an ambitious target of halving child poverty by 2010 and eradicating child poverty by 2020 tackling the core reasons behind child poverty such as housing. This government has a good record of investing money directly into projects through organisations such as The Children’s Fund, relieving some of the effects of child poverty, and these agencies should not be lost. It is good that the Children’s Plan aims to tackle the core issues behind child poverty, yet root and branch change is not going to help those who already live in poverty. We as a government should not only be tackling the causes of child poverty but going further for those who will not benefit from the Children’s Plan.

The plan seems an ambitious and appropriate one in itself, but i have one possible problems with it. It seems that it is using the educational system as a panacea for too many ills in society; resting the too much of the burdon of behavioral and attitudinal problems on teachers, when in truth, many of them are the result of an inequal and fractured society. That said, the government is facing those problems in other ways, but restructuring society isn't an overnight thing..
Nice to see Balls whacking a load of compass stuff in there; you may have seen this, for example.
I think that inequality and moving away from a Bush-based foreign policy will be on the cards too.
you only have to look at the Fabian agenda for the year to see what Gordon Brown will be saying two months after any given date.
