Success for Labour Students at Manchester Met!
Manchester Met (mmunion) is the third largest Students’ Union in the UK and last month Labour Students stormed to victory in their Executive elections. The newly formed Labour Club already held two part-time positions on the Executive. Mature Students Officer and Club Chair, Alan Scobbie, is off to Labour Students HQ from June and he does so leaving behind Rob Boardman elected to the role of VP General Secretary. Rob will be the first Labour Students sabbatical officer at mmunion...ever! It was only four years ago that a former President of mmunion ran for NUS NEC as a candidate of Conservative Future. Manchester Labour Students have shown their commitment to building progressive values in both its redbrick heartland and the new universities.
Although mmunion lacks the political heat of the University of Manchester Students’ Union there has been a challenge from Student RESPECT in previous years. Last year RESPECT won a full time role and almost defeated incumbent sabbaticals. Following the work of Alan and Rob throughout the year a rainbow colour slate of candidates were elected without major opposition with Student RESPECT. The challenge now is for Rob and his team to breathe political activism into an apolitical environment.
With the support of Manchester Labour Students and Rob’s leadership, we are confident that mmunion will prosper into a progressive campaigning organisation in the local community and NUS.
